44. They Will Know We Are Christians

I remember home masses, where a priest actually came to our house and said mass with our family and friends, here in this house. Church on the beach. I can’t even describe how deeply that connected me…

Vatican Two.  I keep thinking about the Catholic Church  in the ’70s.  The music was so bubbly, energetic and zealous.  I remember home masses, where a priest actually came to our house and said mass with our family and friends, here in this house.  Church on the beach.  I can’t even describe how deeply that connected me… six, eight, ten years old.

Pope Paul VI (1897 – 1978), as head of the Catholic Church from 1963 to 1978,
re-convened the Second Vatican Council, taking charge of the interpretation and implementation of its mandates.

There is a song looping in my heart.  It was written by Fr. Peter Scholtes, inspired by John 13:35.

They Will Know We Are Christians

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love
By our love, by our love

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love
By our love, by our love
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christian by our love

I am pondering.  “They will know we are human by our love.”  Evolved human.  That feels real, hopeful.
